Vatnajökull Glacier Walk

Super trucks and glacier walks

Are you ready for a unique adventure, an excursion consisting of a Jeep ride and glacier walk at a location where there are very few people!

What to Expect?

  • Exceptional Conditions for Photography
  • Easy and Fun Hike in a Magnificent Environment
  • Super Jeep Ride
  • Few People
  • Unspoiled, Pure Natural Beauty
  • Spectacular Meeting Point (Jökulsárón/Glacier Lagoon)
  • Professional Guides
  • Safe and Fun

This is a tour for those who wish to enjoy outdoor activities in the fresh mountain air and experience the unspoiled natural beauty of Iceland at its best.

Breiðamerkurjökull is a part of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe, and glacier hiking is the perfect way to get to know this magnificent natural phenomenon while at the same time enjoying the surrounding and majestic mountain views.

We meet at Jökulsárlón and embark on a 30-minute super jeep ride to where we start our walk, at which point all passengers receive necessary safety equipment and instructions from the guide, essential for glacier walks.

During the tour, passengers will acquire knowledge about the glacier and view some unique ice sculpture and crevasse formations.

Conditions for photography are exceptional in this unique landscape, and, again, there will be very few people around.

What is included in the Vatnajokull Glacier Walk?

The tour includes a 30-minute super jeep ride from Jokulsarlon to the glacier, a guided walk on Breidamerkurjokull, all safety equipment (crampons, harness, helmet, and ice axe), and return transfer. Tours are led by professional, English-speaking guides.

How long is the Vatnajokull Glacier Walk?

Total tour duration is 3-4 hours from Glacier Lagoon and back, including the super jeep ride to and from the glacier.

When does the tour operate?

The Vatnajokull Glacier Walk runs from April through October. This is a summer tour focused on glacier hiking and ice formations — not ice caves. For ice cave tours inside Vatnajokull, see the Crystal Blue Ice Cave Adventure and Crystal Blue Ice Cave Discovery (October to April).

What is the difficulty level, and what is the minimum age?

The tour is rated Easy and is suitable for anyone in moderate physical shape. The minimum age is 8 years. No prior experience is required — the guide provides full safety instructions and equipment before you start the walk.

What should I wear and bring?

Hiking boots with ankle support are required. Wear warm, layered clothing — fleece or wool base layers plus a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Bring gloves, a hat, water, an energy-rich snack or lunch, and a camera. Jeans are not recommended as denim absorbs moisture and takes a long time to dry.

How many people are on each tour?

Groups are a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 14 people, which means you will have plenty of space on the glacier and very few other visitors around — one of the highlights of this tour.

Where does the tour depart from, and when?

The tour departs at 09:30 and 14:00 daily from the Glacier Lagoon (Jokulsarlon) on Iceland’s South Coast, approximately five hours from Reykjavik. Please arrive at the meeting point in good time before your departure. The tour costs 16,500 ISK per person.
